Tradesmen: Is Your Beard a Health & Safety Hazard?

by Rhino Trade Insurance | Jun 05, 2017

We all know how popular beards are in recent times, making it seem almost compulsory for at least one person per business to have one. Well, you may not be happy to discover that beards have been banned by one company. Is it time to get the shaver out? If you do, it isn't likely you'll need tool insurance, but here's what the company had to say...

The Times reported this week that construction company, The Mears Group, has banned beards on site due to health and safety concerns.

The Mears Group back their decision, stating that they prevent dust masks from forming a proper seal to the skin and so opening them up for prosecution, but union group, Unite, are less than impressed with the measure, criticising the ban as a cost-saving exercise as other types of mask are available.

“If you are clean-shaven when wearing tight-fitting masks (ie those which rely on a good seal to the face), this will help prevent leakage of contaminated air around the edges of the mask and into your lungs,” according to guidelines from the regulator.

Whilst the increasingly popular beard might be causing some issues, it's unlikely the UK's tradesman industry is going to be dusting off the razors any time soon and if you do, don't forget to have tradesman insurance to cover for any damage that may occur.
