Carpenters' and joiners' insurance can help protect your business from a range of issues you might face while running your carpentry business. Whether it’s day-to-day on-site risks, legal issues that arise from running a business, or a personal financial buffer if you’re forced off work through illness or injury, well-rounded insurance can offer significant financial protection for you and your business.
What carpenter and joiner insurance is available?
Insurance policies are designed to protect carpenters and joiners financially. Here are some that UK-based carpenters and joiners can consider:
Public Liability Insurance
Public Liability Insurance is a core insurance product for carpenters and joiners. It protects your business if you cause damage to a customer's property or cause death or injury to a member of the public. Cover levels range from £1 million to £5 million, and prices start from £6.07 per month.
Employers’ Liability Insurance
A legal requirement if you employ staff. It helps protect your business if an employee brings a claim against you should they fall ill or become injured as a result of your business’ negligence. Find out more about it here.
Professional Indemnity Insurance
Offers protection if a client claims that your advice, design or professional services caused them financial loss. Read up on the differences between Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurance in our guide.
Tools in Transit Insurance
Offers a financial payout up to your chosen level of cover if your tools are stolen from your vehicle, even when stored overnight - subject to certain security conditions. Tool theft continues to be an issue for the trades, with over 80% of Rhino customers knowing someone who has been affected by it.
Legal Expenses Insurance
Covers the cost of legal representation if your business faces situations such as an employment dispute or non-paying customers.
Personal Accident Insurance
Pays out a tax-free lump sum if you’re forced off work through injury, whether suffered in or out of work. Personal Accident Insurance can be combined with Income Protection Insurance.
Income Protection Insurance
Pays out a monthly benefit if you’re forced off work due to injury or illness, whether suffered in or out of work. Read up on the differences between Personal Accident Insurance and Income Protection Insurance in our guide.
Gadget Insurance
Protects your gadgets, such as your phone and laptop, if they're lost, stolen, or damaged.
Does carpenters’ and joiners' insurance cover Public Liability claims?
If you have an active Public Liability Insurance policy in place, then yes, you will be covered in line with your policy wording.
Public Liability Insurance claims typically arise from damage caused to third party property or injury to a member of the public. Put yourself in a position where you’re carrying materials into the property you’re working on, you attempt to walk up the stairs, but as you turn, the timber you’re carrying hits and breaks through the wall. In this instance, you could make a claim under your Public Liability Insurance for accidental damage, and your insurer would cover the repair costs less the policy excess.
Or, in relation to injury to a member of the public - a customer is walking through the property you’re working on and trips on the wire to your jigsaw, falls and injures their leg. They bring a claim against your business and seek compensation for their injury. Again, if your business is deemed liable, your insurer would cover the cost up to your chosen level of cover.
Are tools and equipment covered under a carpenters’ and joiners’ insurance policy?
If you take out Tools in Transit Insurance, then yes, your tools are protected if they're stolen while stored in your vehicle. Rhino’s Tools in Transit Insurance protects your tools in the event of theft, even at night, provided your vehicle is locked and parked securely, such as on your driveway or on the same street and clearly visible from where you’re staying.
The policy will only reimburse costs for stolen tools, provided you have proof of purchase, such as receipts or invoices. The policy also applies a 10% depreciation for each year you’ve owned the tool, up to five years, and you must purchase it alongside an active Public Liability Insurance policy. Rhino do not offer stand-alone tools insurance. For more information, check out our Ultimate Guide to Tools Insurance for a deep dive.
