When would Public Liability Insurance protect me as a Plumber?

Rhino Trade Insurance Thursday, 17 September 2026

Public Liability Insurance offers financial protection for your business, up to your chosen level of cover, if you’re deemed liable for damage caused to a customer’s property, or if you were to injure them or a member of the public. Without it, your business would need to cover compensation and legal fees.

Can you give me a specific example?

Of course! Plumbers are one of the highest-risk trades we cover because of the number of claims made.

Here's a real-life example of a claim made by a plumber that paid out over £1,000.

The plumber installed new pipework as part of contract at a customer's property, which later malfunctioned. The leak soaked through the plasterboard installed, causing significant damage to the surrounding area.

Fortunately, the plumber had an active Public Liability Insurance policy in place, and rather than paying out of his own pocket, his insurance with Rhino covered the £1,000+ worth of damage.

How much is it?

Public Liability Insurance for plumbers starts at £19.33 per month, which offers up to £1 million in cover. In scenarios like the above, the annual cost of the policy is far cheaper than covering the damages yourself.

How much cover would I need?

That depends entirely on your business requirements. If you’re only carrying out domestic work, £1 million cover may be enough for you. However, if you’re looking to take on contract work with councils, for example, £2 million is often the minimum level of cover required. Rhino offers cover up to £5 million.

What affects the price of my premium?

Many factors go into calculating your premium. From the level of risk your trade faces day to day, the number of workers you employ, the level of cover you choose, plus the type of work you carry out, to name a few. There are many reasons your premium may differ from someone you know. To find out more, take a deep dive here. (Link to new article on premium calculations).

Why does a Plumber need Public Liability Insurance?

Other than the obvious of protecting your business should you need to make a claim for damaging property or causing injury to a member of the public, Public Liability Insurance offers reassurance to your customer should something go wrong, neither of you will be out of pocket.

There are countless stories of tradespeople abandoning projects and leaving customers high and dry, leaving customers with serious issues to face. Having the correct protection in place gives them peace of mind that you’re financially covered if something untoward were to happen.

Public Liability Insurance is often a prerequisite for contract work too. Job boards also require proof of insurance before you can promote your services there.

On top of that, over 70% of Rhino customers take out insurance for peace of mind, knowing that if something goes wrong, their business is financially protected.

How do I prove that I have Public Liability Insurance?

The best way to prove that you have Public Liability Insurance is to have your Public Liability Insurance Schedule to hand. And no, we don’t mean carrying a physical copy around all the time, but having one saved on your phone, should a customer or trade association request proof of cover, makes things a bit easier.

Once you’ve completed your purchase with Rhino, we’ll send a copy of your schedule over to your inbox. You can also download them in your account area too.

When else would I need insurance?

Insurance from Rhino can help protect your business from a variety of scenarios. It all depends on how much protection you want for your business.

Plumbers, along with others in the trade, face the continued threat of tools theft. In fact, over 80% of Rhino customers know someone who has had their tools stolen. Rhino’s Tools in Transit Insurance can help get you back on the tools quickly, should you fall victim yourself.

There’s also Employer’s Liability Insurance you’ll have to consider should you employ staff. It’s a legal requirement and will be automatically added to your quote should you choose more than one worker. It helps protect your business if an employee makes a claim against you because they become ill or injured due to your business’ negligence. You can find out more about it here (link to guide).

You may want to consider Personal Accident Insurance and Income Protection Insurance to help cover everyday costs such as your mortgage, rent, and household bills if you're forced off work due to injury or illness.

Do I have to have Public Liability Insurance?

Legally, no, you don’t. As much as we’d like it to be, Public Liability Insurance isn’t a legal requirement! However, having the right cover in place can help you win work and contracts, and give you and your customers peace of mind when you step on site. We think it’s a price worth paying.
