What Insurance Do I Need As Tradesman?

Rhino Trade Insurance 23 February 2022

The team at Rhino HQ have been inundated with requests for a full-scale, A-Z bible of all the insurances a self-employed tradesperson can get. What are they all? Are they needed? Are they useful for your line of work? All your questions will be answered below!

Public Liability Insurance

What is it?

The grandmaster! The entry to your trade insurance kingdom. Public Liability Insurance is one of the most popular types of cover you will find on the market. It is designed to protect you or your business from a claim if you accidentally damage a customer or third parties property or injure/kill a member of the public because of the work you are doing.

Do you need it?

You most definitely need it. Although it's not a legal requirement, you'd be a fool to give it a miss. All self-respecting and decent tradesmen have Public Liability Insurance. Without it, you are leaving yourself wide open for any potential claims that could result in you paying out tens of thousands of pounds. What's more, most sites you work at these days will ask if you have insurance in place before you can pick up any tools. So save yourself the hassle and take out a policy now.

What it covers

Public Liability Insurance with Rhino Trade Insurance costs as little as £6.07 a month and can be tailored depending on what trade you work in. It covers you up to your chosen level of indemnity for any risks or hazards you will find onsite that could result in damage or injury to a customer or their property. Your policy is designed so that a payout will be made to cover legal expenses and any compensation owed by your business if a claim is made.

Employers Liability Insurance

What is it?

Do you employ staff who work under you onsite? Then you need Employers Liability Insurance. Not only is it a legal requirement, but it will also protect you and your business in the event of an employee making some mistake that causes damage to a customer's property or injuring themselves whilst undertaking work for your business.

Do you need it?

See our above point. If you have anybody working for you onsite, you will need this type of policy by law. Without it, you are leaving your business financially exposed, not to mention breaking the law, which can see you being fined up to £2,500 a day.

What it covers

For as little as £72.80 a year, you could get Employers Liability Insurance coverage with Rhino Trade Insurance. This policy has been designed with trade businesses that hire staff in mind. It's a safety blanket so that any costs or compensations incurred due to a claim will keep you protected up to your chosen level of indemnity.

Professional Indemnity Insurance For Tradesman

What is it?

Without throwing around a load of insurance jargon, Professional Indemnity Insurance is there to protect anyone who provides advice, their expertise or design work as a part of their trade. The insurance will cover you for any costs incurred due to dodgy advice given or if a loss is suffered.

Do you need it?

We know you are a qualified tradesman and that providing the best possible service to your clients is rule numero uno. However, without that laser-like focus, things can always head south! If a mistake happens, having this type of insurance can help you in the long run because even the slightest mistake can cost an arm and a leg.

Simply put, having this insurance will help you sleep better at night than a hot cup of Horlicks. It will cover you for any significant costs you incur via faulty advice.

What it covers

Professional Indemnity Insurance is designed to cover you for a variety of things. Your legal defence is one of them. Having a legal defence costs money, and with our insurance, any cost for defending you in court will be covered. What's more, your compensation would be covered too. After the claim, if you owe money to rectify a situation, your insurance policy will pay our compensation owed. Our limits range from £100k to £2 million, and our policies start from just £235.20 a year.

It's a popular addition to our Public Liability and Employer's Liability cover.

What it covers

Having Contractors All Risks Insurance as part of your tradesman insurance grants you an unparalleled level of cover and makes sound business sense for anybody working on a building construction site. Rhino's policy starts at just £11.20 a month and covers you for:

Tradesman Tool Insurance

What is it?

This type of insurance is there for tradesmen to cover the cost of replacing or repairing any tools you have indemnified. It also has your back for when they are lost or damaged - bonus! Quite simply, there isn't much you can get done without your tools. That's where Rhino Trade Insurance's Tools In Transit Insurance cover works its magic.

Do you need it?

We'd say absolutely yes! But don't just take our word for it. Ask around. We have found that many tradesmen and women know of someone who has had their tools nicked. What's more, if you don't have this type of cover in place and the worst happens, it could cost you thousands of pounds to get back to work. Don't take the risk. Get your equipment covered ASAP.

What it covers

With Rhino Trade Insurance, your tools are covered up to £10,000. This includes the cost of any servicing needed to reinstate or replace your tools that are lost, damaged or destroyed whilst carrying out your regular daily work.

Rhino has you covered for when the tools are 'in transit, which means you are on route to your job or home. 'In your parked vehicle', which is when they are stored in your van overnight subject to obligations. And finally, 'whilst loading' means taking your tools to/from your van. We are one of the only trade insurance providers to offer all three. Our tool insurance starts at just £5.75 a month. Check it out now for more information

Do you need it?

We'll let you decide but here are just a few of the best reasons why you need Legal Expenses Insurance:

Personal Accident Insurance

What is it?

Having Personal Accident Insurance in place provides you with protection if you suffer an injury or worse (death) due to the work you are doing. Tradesmen and women all over the UK are dealing with high-risk situations daily, and if something goes wrong on-site, you could be out of work for some time. So it's best to be covered in case that day comes!

Do you need it?

We are biased, but of course, we'd say you need it because we want you to have the best protection going. With Rhino Trade Insurance, it costs as little as £7.42 a month to get yourself covered and provides a lump sum of up to £50,000 in the event of a claim. Ask yourself: "how often have I been injured or come close to an accident or known someone to be laid off due to a mistake". Chances are, in the trade game, you know someone who has sustained an injury and been off work. This insurance is there to provide a financial safety net if you can't work and need money in your skyrocket (pocket)!

What it covers

Personal Accident Insurance with Rhino offers a variety of cover. Taking out this policy will protect you against burns, fractures, loss of hearing, injury to the shoulder, elbow, finger and toes and many more.
