TIPS TO KEEP YOUR TOOLS SAFE

Davina Chohan Friday, 10 January 2020

Following on from our previous article published in December 2019, tool theft is becoming a national crisis. With it being a New Year, it would be great to see the number of tool theft statistics drop.

We have put together 5 strong pointers which we believe can solve the theft problem that exists in this country.

MAKE YOUR TOOLS INACCESSIBLE

The harder your tools are to access the better. Having a tool locking system in place is a great way to keep your tools secure and act as a guard.

Heavy steel security chains and padlocks would do the job. If a thief does enter your van, this kind of protection will take up a lot more of their time, making their task more difficult. If a thief is likely to use a bolt chopper to cut through, this will also be a challenging task for them. They will also be creating a lot of noise in the process which gives a better chance of them being caught. This is also a cost effect solution.

You can also purchase more advanced locks which have a code to unlock. With something only, you can remember the thief isn’t going to have much luck.

ALARM SYSTEM

Having an alarm system fitted is a great way to scare thieves off. If there is suspicious activity detected, the alarm should go off which should scare the thief off straight away. You can purchase alarm theft alert systems from a basic level to an advanced level where you can control activity through your mobile.

FIT A GPS TRACKER

GPS trackers are a great solution as the tracker is visibly attached to your tools. If a thief was to realise this, they would most likely avoid stealing the tools as there is too much risk involved of them being caught. More of a risk than reward factor for them. However, if they do not notice and decided to steal the tools, you can track where the tools are. This can be done through your smartphone.

MAKE YOUR TOOLS DISTINCTIVE

By adding your own personal touch to your tools such as engraving them, makes them easier to identify and more difficult for your tools to be sold on. This will lower the value of the tools therefore, making resale difficult.

GET THE RIGHT INSURANCE POLICY

Unfortunately, in a worst-case scenario if your tools are stolen, its best to be prepared. Checking that you have the right insurance policy or having tools in transit insurance is vital for your business. In an unfortunate situation, where your tools do happen to get stolen, you can be assured that you will be able to recover the cost of replacing your tools if they are stolen, which can also help your business get back up and running.

We hope our tips are useful and taken on board by you. Let’s stop thieves from getting away and put this epidemic to an end!
