What is Public Liability Insurance?

Public Liability Insurance will protect you financially if a client, member of the public, supplier, visitor or customer suffers an injury, illness, or damage to their property because of your business activities.

It will also cover you in the worst-case scenario – accidental death of a member of the public that is caused by your business activities. Public Liability Insurance will cover legal expenses and/or compensation owed by your business in the event of a claim. Rhino offers levels of cover of £1M, £2M, and £5M, and we can offer up to £10M on special request. Workplace accidents aren’t rare, and there is always the possibility that you could cause damage or harm to third parties whilst you are working. Our Public Liability Insurance also adds value to your business, as you can prove to potential customers or contractors that you are a reliable, safe worker who can cover the costs if there’s any injuries or property damage whilst on the job.

What does Public Liability Insurance cover?

Rhino’s Public Liability Insurance will insure your business against the cost of a third party bringing legal action against you for injury, death or property damage caused by your business activities.

It doesn’t matter who the claimant is, whether they are a customer of yours or a contractor you are working for, you’re still covered with Rhino. The policy will cover the legal costs and compensation associated with the claim up to the limit of indemnity chosen by you. Rhino’s Public Liability Insurance policies cover Public/Product Liability and Pollution Liability Insurance as standard, and cover can be purchased for work up to 15 metres in height and to depth limits down to 2 metres. Getting cover for your business with Rhino is easy. You can use our online quote engine, or call our friendly, expert team for a chat on 0116 243 7904.

Who is Public Liability Insurance for?

Public Liability Insurance is a bread-and-butter for self-employed tradespeople, offering essential financial protection to your business. Without it, even a minor mishap could result in expensive claims and legal fees, putting unnecessary strain on your business’ finances.

No matter how your business is structured, whether you’re a sole trader, director of a limited company, or a bona-fide subcontractor, you have a duty and responsibility to ensure that you are covered in the event of a claim.. Rhino’s Public Liability Insurance covers you for damages to third party properties or injuries to members of the public, so you can rest assured that your business is taken care of if an incident occurs. Public Liability Insurance is crucial no matter what your trade, so whether you’re a gas engineer, bricklayer, cleaner, gardener, electrician, builder or work in any other trade under the sun, having the right level of cover in place is vital. You can purchase your policy through Rhino over the phone or online, and our helpful team will look after you every step of the way.

HOW MUCH DOES Public Liability Insurance COST?

Public Liability Insurance starts from £5.21 /month with Rhino. Prices are calculated depending on the level of risk your business poses and depends on several factors. Commonly, your trade dictates the premium of your liability insurance. Those working in lower-risk trades, such as cleaning or carpentry will usually pay less for their Public Liability Insurance than someone working on gas systems, doing plumbing work or digging up groundworks. Another factor that affects the premium is the number of people you are covering. Chances are the more people you have working on a project, the more likely the event of a claim. Other factors can include your business’ turnover, the level of cover you wish to take out and in some cases, the locations where you are working.

DO YOU NEED EMPLOYERS LIABILITY INSURANCE?

Employers Liability Insurance protects the policyholder in the event of a claim being brought against them by one of their own employees, and is a legal requirement for any business that hires paid employees, although there are some exceptions to this which you can read about in our Ultimate Guide to Employers' Liability Insurance.

Employers Liability Insurance will be added to your quote if you select cover for more than one employee. If you believe that you are exempt from this, please use the chat function to speak to a member of the team or give us a call on 0116 243 7904.

Public Liability Insurance FAQs

Public Liability Insurance is one of the most common types of business insurance. It covers the cost of compensation and legal fees if a member of the public, including customers, clients, suppliers, or others who interact with your business, take legal action against your business as a result of their property being damaged, or they have been injured due to your work. Whether you are a self-employed tradesperson, limited company or partnership, Public Liability Insurance is a key policy.
Public Liability Insurance protects your business against potentially significant compensation and legal fees if you cause injury to a member of the public or cause damage to a property. It provides reassurance for customers who will feel more at ease knowing there's protection in place should something go wrong on the job, and it's usually a requirement for any commercial contracts or member accreditations. Public Liability Insurance can cost only a small amount each month, but the pay-off should a claim be brought against your business could be immeasurable.
Holding Public Liability Insurance is not a legal requirement, but it is a fundamental business insurance which is there to protect your business. Not having Public Liability Insurance could cost your company thousands, and even lead to bankruptcy, due to the costs of having to settle a claim. Many contractors and customers will request to see a copy of your Public Liability Insurance for you to land a job, so having it available can enhance the reputation of your business, meaning you get more work.
Any business which involves in-person contact with the public, customers or suppliers is subject to a degree of risk when it comes to public liability. Public Liability Insurance is recommended for pretty much every type of business, but it's particularly important for people operating in the trades due to the overwhelming amount of risk that tradespeople deal with on a daily basis. Examples include plumbers (an incorrectly fitted pipe could lead to water damage), electricians (faulty wiring could lead to a fire), builders (exposure to multiple hazards), bricklayers (brick dust causing sickness or damage), and gardeners (tools left lying around could cause injury). Rhino offers cover for tradespeople working in over 70 unique trades.
Public Liability Insurance covers the legal expenses and compensation owed, up to your chosen level of cover, should a claim be made against your business. These costs are usually made up of compensation to the claimant, which can include repairing damages, medical treatment and inconvenience, as well as legal bills incurred in the process of deciding if, and how much, they're entitled to. Incidents arising from injuries to members of the public or damages to third party property would be covered. Rhino offers cover levels of up to £1M, £2M and £5M, with a £10M limit also available on request.
Public Liability Insurance with Rhino starts at £62.50 per year, or £5.21 per month. The cost is dependent on the type of business you run and the level of insurance that you require. A larger business with a broad scope of activities and multiple employees is likely to attract a higher premium than a one-man operation. Businesses carrying out lower risk activities will pay a lower price, while higher risk businesses are likely to pay more.
How much Public Liability Insurance you need depends on the type of work you carry out and the size of your business. Customers or contractors will sometimes stipulate a minimum level of cover before offering you work, so checking with them can help inform your decision. You can also use Rhino's quick quote engine to get a tailored quote based on a few details about your business. If you're still unsure, Rhino's team of trade insurance experts are happy to help - call them on 0116 243 7904.
You can get Public Liability Insurance directly through Rhino's online quote engine, or by calling 0116 243 7904. Rhino provides all the relevant certificates in minutes, and you have up to 14 days to change your mind and cancel your policy for a full refund.
Public Liability Insurance covers claims relating to injuries to clients, customers, members of the public, or any damages to third party property. Employers' Liability Insurance specifically covers your business against claims made against you by your employees relating to negligence on your part. A key difference is that Employers' Liability Insurance is a legal requirement, whether your employees are temporary or permanent, whereas Public Liability Insurance is usually a contractual requirement.
Whilst not a legal requirement, if you do any work that means you come into contact with customers or the general public, then yes, Public Liability Insurance is something to seriously consider. Having Public Liability Insurance is not dependent on your business structure (whether sole trader, limited company director, partnership, etc.) or the number of people working for you, but the type of work you undertake. If your work has the potential to cause injury to a third party, or damage to their property, then it’s wise to have Public Liability Insurance in place.
Rhino's Public Liability Insurance is provided by MGAM Limited on behalf of MS Amlin Insurance SE, UK Branch - a specialist insurance and re-insurance provider. MS Amlin has almost $2 billion of market capitalisation and is rated A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best, a well-renowned global rating agency.
Rhino's Public Liability Insurance carries a standard excess of £500. This means that in the event of a claim, the policyholder pays the first £500 and the insurer pays the remainder. For example, on a £20,750 claim, the customer pays £500 and the insurer pays £20,250. The excess increases to £1,000 in the event of a claim resulting from the use of heat (such as gas engineering) or damage to underground services. Rhino also offers Excess Protection for £25.00, which covers the customer from having to pay the excess should they need to make a claim.
Rhino's Public Liability Insurance policies cover both commercial and domestic work being carried out, unless stated otherwise. In most cases, as a Rhino Trade Insurance customer, you can operate in both domestic and commercial environments with the knowledge that the work you are carrying out is covered.
Rhino Trade Insurance is valid for work carried out in the United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands) only. Work done outside of the UK will not be covered. Certain locations are also excluded from cover, including docks, harbours, railways, watercraft, offshore gas or oil installations, chemical or petrochemical works, oil or gas refineries or storage facilities, aircraft, airports, airfields, collieries, mines, quarries, power stations, and any installation where nuclear processing is undertaken.
Public Liability Insurance for a sole trader starts from £62.50 per year. However, the cost depends on the type of work you do, your annual turnover, the level of cover you choose, and your claims history.
