Check for any penalties

In that case, you may want to find out if there are any penalties, like a cancellation fee, for switching insurance companies before the end of the coverage period. Fortunately, many trade insurance policies generally give you the right to cancel your policy at any time as long as you provide proper notice.

Most insurers will likely refund your unused policy cost; some may charge a fee if you choose to cancel in the middle of your insurance term. Before cancelling, you may like to find out in your policy handbook whether or not you will be charged a penalty for cancelling in the middle of your term.

Remember, if you are within 14 days of your policy inception or renewal, insurance providers have an obligation to honour a free cancellation and pro-rata refund should you wish to take your business elsewhere!

Just follow this easy process: contact your current insurance company and notify them that you are cancelling your policy, check that your bank doesn’t have a standing order with the company, and if so, be sure to cancel the future payments. Finally, make sure to ask for email evidence that your policy has been updated, sometimes verbal communication can get lost in translation!
