Trade Insurance - Can I Change Provider?

Rhino Trade Insurance 01 November 2021

Whether you are a tradesman or woman looking to change your Gas Engineer's Public Liability policy, an Electrician looking to cover their tools, or virtually any other type of tradesperson looking for insurance, you have come to the right place!

Rhino Trade Insurance offers a variety of tradesman insurance policies and has carefully designed individual coverage options for almost every trade in the UK. So you may be thinking “this sounds great, but am I able to change my insurance provider?”. Let’s take a short look now!

Consider your cover options

Not having enough trade insurance coverage can leave you financially exposed, but too much cover may mean you are overpaying on your policy! If you think you are overspending or underspending, you may want to consider switching trade insurance.

If you are debating whether or not to switch then it would be best to look into your policy documents for any hidden cancel clauses, or simply contact your insurance provider to check for any cancellation fees. Either way, you can always speak with one of our insurance experts here at Rhino for help on the matter.

Check for any penalties

Suppose you decide that switching your trade insurance is the right option. In that case, you may want to find out if there are any penalties, like a cancellation fee, for switching insurance companies before the end of the coverage period. Fortunately, many trade insurance policies generally give you the right to cancel your policy at any time as long as you provide proper notice.

Most insurers will likely refund your unused policy cost; some may charge a fee if you choose to cancel in the middle of your insurance term. Before cancelling, you may like to find out in your policy handbook whether or not you will be charged a penalty for cancelling in the middle of your term.

Remember, if you are within 14 days of your policy inception or renewal, insurance providers have an obligation to honour a free cancellation and pro-rata refund should you wish to take your business elsewhere!

If you have only just recently taken out liability insurance and want to switch to Rhino, note that all insurance policies have a 14-day cooling-off period where you can cancel unpenalized, so switching to Rhino maybe even more simple than you think. If you want to switch to Rhino trade insurance, then you can do so today. Simply give our team a call on 0116 243 7904 or you can easily purchase it yourself online.

Avoid a gap in cover and make sure your old policy is cancelled!

As tradespeople, we understand that you are no doubt super busy, and probably wanted here, there and everywhere! If you switch close to the end of your policy expiry date, be sure that your new policy starts on or before your current expiry. Otherwise, a lapse in coverages and an accident could land you in serious hot water! (No pun intended there Plumbers!) If you caused an accident or damage to a customers property without insurance cover, you’d be liable to pay the fees yourself.

What’s more, do not simply assume your old policy is cancelled if you switch, you may actually continue paying premiums if you don’t let your provider know - especially if you are paying on an auto-renewal basis!

Just follow this easy process: contact your current insurance company and notify them that you are cancelling your policy, check that your bank doesn’t have a standing order with the company, and if so, be sure to cancel the future payments. Finally, make sure to ask for email evidence that your policy has been updated, sometimes verbal communication can get lost in translation!

Rhino provides tradesmen insurance for almost any trade you can imagine. Our insurance policies offer varying levels of cover and our low-cost liability insurance keeps you protected if your client or a member of the public suffers an injury or damage to their property that was your fault. It will payout for the expenses and compensation owed by your business (up to your chosen level over cover).

Whether you are a builder, bricklayer, carpenter, sparky, plumber, gardener, handyman or whatever else. You can be sure that we have the right cover for you, your business and any employees you have. Call 0116 243 7904 or Get a Quote quick and easy now.
